This is where our journey begins.
The beginning
Born in Islip, New York, James A. Mancuso was raised in small town Long Island, where music was a constant presence throughout his childhood. He sang in his church's children's choir and participated in the many choral ensembles offered by his schools. His passion for opera began in high school after discovering the art form in a music appreciation class, an experience that led him to attend his first performance at the Metropolitan Opera: La bohème. That evening sparked a lifelong love of opera and set him on the path toward a professional singing career.
The journey so far
After getting his degree in Music Performance from Florida Southern College, he set off to his first auditions.
- Apprentice and Studio artist at Sarasota Opera from 2020-2023.
- Apprentice artist at Central City Opera where he sang Joe in Puccini's La fanciulla del West and Lippo Fiorentino in Kurt Weill's Street Scene in 2024.
- Studio Artist at Florida Grand Opera from 2024-2026 where he sang many roles. Most notably, 1st Priest and 1st armoured man in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Covering Don José in Bizet's Carmen, Kronprintz in Kevin Puts' Silent Night and Pang in Puccini's Turandot.
He also performed with many other companies during this time.
- Rinuccio in Bronx Opera's Gianni Schicchi in 2023.
- Alfred in Strauss' Die Fledermaus with Bel Cantanti Opera in 2024.
- Gonsalve in Ravel's L'heure espagnole with Bel Cantanti Opera in 2025.
- Made his soloist debut at Carnagie Hall December 14th 2025 with the UN Chamber Music Society.
The future
Upcoming and current
While his summer is winding down, he is preparing for new projects!
- Just finished his summer performances with Varna International as Don José in Bizet's Carmen and John Brooks in Little Women by Allan Knee.
- This September he embarks on Brittan's The Turn of the Screw with Bel Cantanti Opera as The Prologue and Peter Quint.
- March of 2027, he returns to Florida Grand Opera to perform Ismaele in Nabucco.
